About a year ago, USAA nearly doubled my insurance rates. I’m not sure how long I’ve been overpaying. I’ve seen many posts like mine mentioning low-cost insurance companies hiking rates upon renewal. Here’s my experience.
Progressive offered me $100k coverage for less than $30k at USAA. My first premium was $741 per 6 months. The next renewal was $762. Now, after a year, it’s $770.
My experience with Progressive mirrors yours. I filed an auto claim recently, and the process was painless. My policy is up for renewal this month, and my rates actually decreased.

I switched from Geico to Progressive. Progressive has raised rates each year, but they’re still cheaper and offer higher coverage limits than Geico. It’s a win/win for me.
I recently switched my car and home insurance from USAA to Progressive and am saving about $1000 per year in total. Home coverage is nearly the same, and auto coverage is actually much better.
I expect rates to increase over the next few years, but as someone mentioned earlier, it’s good practice to shop around periodically. You’re not obligated to stay with one insurer.
My experience is the opposite. I’ve been with Progressive for 4 years, and they’ve steadily increased rates, surpassing USAA. I’m switching back to USAA for home, auto, and umbrella policies. I’m already saving $1200 across the policies, and that’ll increase once we get our SafePilot discount on the next renewal.
I shared my experience after switching and got replies like ‘wait until after 6 months.’ I saved $2600 with identical coverage. Why pay an extra $5200 a year and never switch?

You should switch. My new Progressive rate after 6 months was higher than what USAA offered me to return, so I left Progressive.
People mention waiting because your rate won’t stay low forever. It may or may not be competitive in 6 months. That’s all they’re saying, not to discourage you from switching for lower rates.

We advocate people keep getting quotes and switch back and forth as it makes sense. I’ve switched four times in two years, each time saving over $100/month.
I’ve been with Progressive for two years, and each time my premium has decreased. I also have much better coverage than I did with USAA. Texas Farm Bureau was good initially, but then they started hiking rates like crazy.
