Anyone know a good pay-by-mile insurance? My Metromile rates doubled

Hey all, I could use some advice on pay-by-mile insurance. I hardly drive, maybe once every two weeks just to keep the car running while I run errands. I work from home, and my car’s really just a backup now for my partner. I’ve been with Metromile for 9 years, and this year they doubled my rate even though I haven’t filed any claims.

I liked Metromile’s setup since I just plugged in a device, and it tracked mileage on its own. I’m considering switching to another pay-by-mile company. I saw Mile Auto as an option in my state, but it looks like I’d need to manually send in an odometer photo each month. It’s doable, just not as convenient.

Anyone using Mile Auto or another pay-by-mile option? Would love to hear any experiences.

Just a heads-up, insurance prices have gone up everywhere. I’ve been in the business for almost 19 years, and I’ve never seen increases like these before.

Since you’re an agent, who would you recommend for pay-by-mile?

@Lin
Most of my experience is with Allstate and Nationwide, but I find traditional policies often work better for clients.

I heard some interesting theories from an insurance rep once about rates going up because of more drivers on the road. Sounded like a stretch though.

@Reese
Yeah, sounds like they need a different line of work with an answer like that!

I’ve been with Mile Auto for a couple of years, and they’ve been great. However, I just got a letter saying they’re pulling out of Texas. Has anyone else heard about this?

I sure hope not because I just signed up with them here in Texas!

@Shan
I’m in Texas and got the same non-renewal notice. They’re pausing the program here. I have until April 5 to find another option.

I haven’t received any notice yet, but I haven’t hit my renewal date either.

I was able to still get a quote here in Texas.

@Tali
Did you end up getting the quote? I’m also considering Mile Auto in Texas.

Yeah, got a non-renewal notice saying they’re pausing the Mile Auto program here in Texas. Anyone found another per-mile insurance?

@Stevie
They said the same thing to me, pulling out of Texas. I went with A-Max for a basic policy instead. It was cheaper than adding it to my Progressive policy.

Did you end up switching to Mile Auto?

If Metromile’s rates doubled, Mile Auto could be a good alternative. Just keep in mind you’ll need to send in a photo of the odometer each month.

Allstate or Nationwide might have options for pay-by-mile policies.

I tried Allstate online, and they ended up redirecting me to a different insurer. Nationwide was actually more expensive when I checked last time.

I have Metromile too, and it’s been good since I only drive about 500 miles a month. But I just got a notice that my rate is going way up. Never tried Mile Auto, but it sounds worth checking out.

Yeah, Metromile was great up until now. I’ll probably give Mile Auto a try, but still exploring other options too.
