Would flood insurance cover soil erosion from a flood on my property?

My property and my neighbor’s back up to a creek, though calling it a creek is a bit of a stretch since it’s usually just a trickle. While I’m not experiencing any erosion, my neighbor is. The erosion isn’t directly caused by the creek, but by poor drainage on his property. When it rains, it creates a channel that meets the creek at about a 30-degree angle. The erosion is currently about 20 feet from my property. Would flood insurance cover erosion on my property if it happens?

You might want to look into coverage for landslides or earth movement.

Thanks, I’ll check into that.

It really depends on how your flood insurance policy defines coverage.

Typically, flood insurance covers damage caused directly by flooding. The general definition is: a flood involves excess water on land that is normally dry, affecting two or more acres of land or two or more properties.

Based on that, it might not cover erosion.

@Remy
Based on that definition, it sounds like I might be covered, but I can definitely see the insurance company arguing against it. Given how expensive it is, I just want to make sure it would cover something like a storm washing away my yard before I commit.

@Rin
I don’t think you’ll get a clear assurance that this would be covered based on the info you’ve shared.

Yeah, that’s what I was afraid of.

Since soil erosion would be considered an indirect loss caused by flooding, it likely wouldn’t be covered.
