Will replacing my windshield raise my insurance premiums?

A rock hit my M3 windshield today on the highway, and now it looks like I’ll need a full replacement.

This is my first time dealing with this, so I’m wondering if filing a claim with insurance to cover the windshield could lead to higher premiums?

I have a $1000 deductible, and they gave me a choice between Safelite and Tesla. Tesla requires upfront payment, and then I’d get reimbursed minus the deductible from insurance.

I’ve never seen a premium increase from it, but it does count as a claim. If you get a ticket or a minor accident within the next 3-4 years while this claim is on your record, it could push up your premium. Just my experience, though.

@Christine
Yep, it counts as a claim. If you’re with Tesla insurance, you’ll get half off the windshield cost if you go through Tesla Service with a claim.

Safelite quoted me over $1500 for the replacement.

Aren’t windshields usually around $1100-1200? If I had a $1000 deductible, I’d probably just pay for the windshield myself and skip insurance.

Mine was $700 before a $350 discount, with $350 for labor.

Replacing the Model 3 windshield involves a lot. They take apart the frunk, mirror, lights, and even the camera.

This is an older post, but I’ve had my premiums go up after two windshield claims with Progressive’s $0 deductible. It’s really frustrating because it shouldn’t happen.

Mind sharing how much it went up by? Did the increase happen after the first claim or only after the second one?

Did your premium go up after the first claim for the windshield?

Lots of confusion here :man_facepalming:t2:

Auto insurance typically splits into two parts:

  • Comprehensive - For events out of your control (like rocks hitting your car).
  • Collision - For things you can control (like hitting trees, other cars, etc).

Generally, collision claims will increase your rates, while comprehensive claims won’t.

Best advice is to keep your deductibles low on both comprehensive and collision. I set mine to $100 each. It only costs a bit more each month, but if anything happens, the payout difference is huge over time.

@Dana
My insurance went from $600 to $900+ a month after two windshield claims. One repair, one replacement. It definitely impacts your premium here in Florida.

Same here. One at-fault, one small speeding ticket, and three windshield claims in two years. Some companies won’t cover me now, and my rates are sky-high. If it weren’t for the windshield claims, I’d be fine.

@River
Especially now, with insurance companies looking to increase rates and cut coverage. With storms hitting more often, insurers are getting hit hard. Some folks in Florida can barely afford their homes due to rising insurance costs.

@Shawn
Is it really climate change or just the overall cost of things, especially labor? I haven’t seen more severe weather locally, but our insurance still keeps going up.

Worth noting that many big insurers like Progressive, State Farm, and Farmers operate nationwide.

If your premiums go up depends a lot on your state laws. Some states protect consumers from hikes on minor claims, but in others, insurers can raise rates whenever you file a claim.

This happened to me recently, too. I have a Safelite appointment in two days. Really hoping they can just repair the crack. Does anyone know how long a full replacement takes?

Nope, same thing happened to me about nine months ago. My premium stayed the same, and my agent mentioned rates don’t usually go up for this kind of claim.

Didn’t raise mine.
