I’m shopping for insurance for a Tesla Model 3 with 2WD and no additional features. Despite having nearly 20 years of driving experience with no tickets or accidents, my quotes are consistently between $350 and $450 per month. I live in Los Angeles, California. Are these rates normal?
If you’re in California, Tesla insurance is likely your best bet. It’s often cheaper than other providers. I’ve heard good things about Costco’s insurance, but they don’t offer it in California anymore.
@Morgan
I used Costco for a while, but their billing system was frustrating. I also heard their claims process for Teslas isn’t great.
I’m in my mid-40s and drive a 2019 Model 3 LR. Despite a couple of minor accidents in the past decade, I pay $141/month for Tesla insurance in LA. That’s for 100k/300k coverage with a $500 deductible.

Which company is that with?
@Vance
Tesla insurance in California.
In the Bay Area, I use Tesla Insurance and pay $200/month for 100/300/100 coverage with $1,000 deductibles for collision and comprehensive.

Thanks for sharing! What model do you drive, and is the rate still consistent?
I’m in Riverside County and switched to Tesla insurance. I pay $180/month with better coverage compared to Geico, which was $175/month but had lower limits. I wasn’t happy with Geico after being with them for over 10 years.
$73.74/month with Tesla insurance and a 98 safety score. I have a $500 deductible. Location plays a big role in premiums.

That’s impressively low. Is it mainly because of your zip code?
@DisasterDavid
Zip code and mileage are huge factors. If your rates are that high, maybe reconsider buying a Tesla.
I pay $133/month for my 2023 Model 3 RWD in northern Virginia with USAA. I drive around 6,000 miles per year. Location seems to be a key factor for rates.
I’m 23, live in Atlanta, and pay $223/month with Progressive for a Model 3.
I’m paying $300/month for Tesla insurance in California. I had a minor fender bender over a year ago that wasn’t reported to the police but still seems to affect my rates.
I use Travelers and pay $164/month for my car and my partner’s car. I also have glass and gap coverage.
When I lived in Chicago, Tesla insurance cost me $110/month. After moving to New Mexico, where Tesla insurance isn’t available, my cheapest quote is $350/month.

You might want to try Allstate in New Mexico.
I pay $240/month with Costco insurance. It was $220 initially but went up after six months. I have six years of driving experience and no accidents.
