What Do I Say to My Insurance Agent? Basement Flooding Help!

Hallo…

We had some crazy storms here in the Midwest today, and I came home to find my basement flooded. Ended up vacuuming out about 120 gallons of water with a wet/dry vac. There was some debris in the water, but it didn’t smell, and I’m pretty sure the water came up through the floor, not the walls.
I’ve got extra coverage for water damage, but I’m not sure how to explain this to my insurance agent so they actually cover it. My policy says: “Limited water back-up and sump pump discharge or Overflow Coverage - $15,000.”
I’m kind of freaking out and need help figuring out what to say when I call them. Does anyone have a script or advice on how to word this so I don’t mess it up?

Best wishes…

Report the flooding to your insurance agent as soon as you can. Tell them the time and date that the flooding happened.

Explain what triggered the floods. Was it because to a sump pump failure, a busted pipe, a lot of rain, or something else? This aids in identifying the applicable coverage type.

Record the flooded area and any damaged objects using pictures and videos. This visual proof will back up what you’re saying.

Make a thorough inventory of every item that was lost or damaged. Add their estimated worth and, if available, any receipts.

Inquire about interim fixes so that more harm is avoided. Save all of your receipts for any costs you incur while doing this.
