What can I do to access my USAA account as a minor with a new phone number and no government ID, while my dad (holder of parent account) is in jail?

I’m currently staying with a friend due to both of my parents being in jail (long story). Since my phone bill wasn’t being paid, I had to switch to my friend’s AT&T plan, but my phone was locked to Spectrum. I didn’t have access to my parent’s Spectrum account details, so I had to get a new number.

Now, I need to update my USAA account with my new number, but the app is logged out on both phones - the new one because I hadn’t used it yet, and the old one presumably because the number tied to my account is no longer active.

I thought about calling customer support, but after going through the automated system, my options are limited: either receive a verification code on my old, inactive number or request an extension, which requires knowing an extension number I don’t have.

I’m left with trying USAA.com/verify as a last resort, but they require photos of a government ID for identity verification. I don’t have one yet; I was using an expired temporary UTSA student ID, which USAA doesn’t accept.

I’m in the process of getting a government ID, but it takes time. Is there any way I can access my account sooner?

Your situation really sucks, but USAA can’t help you without a government ID due to banking regulations.

USAA recently updated their processes to potentially accept social security cards submitted to Enable Cookies | USAA | USAA. When they call you, explain your situation; otherwise, they may ask for a photo ID. It’s not a guaranteed fix, but try taking a clear photo in good lighting. Hopefully, this helps!

Can you visit your parents in jail to get account info? Sorry to hear you’re going through this.

It sounds like you’re stuck until you can get a government-issued photo ID. You could have transferred your number to keep it, but I understand that wasn’t possible with your old phone being locked to Spectrum.

@Floyd
Exactly, my old phone was locked to Spectrum, so I couldn’t transfer the number. I wish I could have kept it.

Are you a minor or a college student at UTSA? Normally, you’d need an ID to get a student ID from UTSA. It might be worth looking into getting any form of ID, even if it’s not a driver’s license.

My USAA account isn’t linked to my phone at all. I can log in from any phone with the app installed. I’m not sure why your phone provider matters; you just need your email and password. What else are they asking for?

Contact AT&T and ask them to ‘port’ your old number to your new phone. That might solve the number issue.
