USAA not what it used to be… anyone else feel this way?

I’m done with USAA. I’ve got a CD there at a good rate, but once it matures, I’m pulling out everything. Checking, credit, CD, insurance. All of it. I’m much happier with Charles Schwab for checking, Navy Federal Credit Union, and American Express National Bank. They cover everything I need. USAA’s changed… they feel more about making money than actually caring about their customers anymore.

Same here. I love Schwab, just their phone support alone is better than other places I’ve banked with.

Do you use Schwab for your checking account too?

Yep, checking, brokerage, and Roth. I keep a bit in a local bank too, just in case of emergencies.

@White
I might have to give them a try.

Same here. I use Schwab for retirement accounts already. Dealing with a fraud issue at USAA, so when that’s wrapped up, I may switch everything to Schwab too.

Hey, I’ve been thinking of moving some of my accounts too. How’s Schwab been for you so far?

Only reason I’m moving away from USAA is because they don’t offer a high-yield savings account. Going to SOFI instead.

They have so few branches… you’d think with low overhead they’d offer better than 0.01% APY. Total rip-off.

@Rey
Actually, they only have one branch in TX. It’s the only place you can go in person to deposit cash. CO, AZ, and FL offices don’t have bank services.

I thought there were four locations: TX, AZ, CO, and Maryland.

If you look at major banks, USAA doesn’t really come out on top in anything—credit cards, checking, savings. They’re online-only and so strict on rules that it just makes everything harder to deal with. They’re not the worst, but nothing special either.

I moved almost everything away from USAA except a free checking account, mainly to avoid ATM fees. USAA’s gone off track… all this big spending on NFL ads? Why push ads to the whole country when most people don’t even qualify? They’d be smarter to advertise to people actually looking for military reunions or veterans’ events.

And honestly, every time I see Gronk in a USAA ad, it just makes me double down on not bringing more business there.

I still use USAA checking, it’s not bad, but my issue is no way to deposit cash. Got a credit union account for that.

Yep, I used to just use USAA and my local credit union too.

I’ve been with USAA since I came back from Vietnam in ’72, but I’ve never used them for banking. Always saw them as more of an insurance provider. I use NFCU, Bank of America, and Ally for my banking. BoA is just for family stuff, not a big fan, but NFCU and Ally have been great for me.

Yeah, I went with a local credit union and Cap 1 for high-yield savings. Still keep USAA for insurance, though.
