USAA Car Insurance … Is it really as bad as people say?

I had USAA insurance and had a terrible experience. They promised great rates but then wanted too much access to my phone, like spyware. Customer service was awful, and they made it nearly impossible to file a claim. Anyone else had similar problems with them?

Sure Peaches, sure

I’ve been with USAA for years and haven’t had any issues. I don’t know where you got that idea about spyware.

They have something called SafePilot. I use it and get 30% off my insurance. It’s optional though, you don’t have to use it.

I just left USAA after having them for years. I had car insurance and a credit card with them. I made a purchase on Facebook, and after seeing some warnings, I contacted them to cancel my card and get a new one. That’s when everything went downhill. My whole account was flagged as hacked, and I couldn’t even get through to them by phone. They kept asking for my pin, membership number, or social security number, but nothing matched. I was locked out of the app, and when I tried the website, they asked for a PDF of my driver’s license. That was the last straw for me, so I switched to Progressive and saved $50 a month!

Oh, and the phone tracking is awful. My phone pinged me when my purse slid off the seat while I was driving down a hill. It counted that as a ‘fast stop’ even though I was going slow and making a left turn. They said they didn’t have enough data to know if I’m a safe driver, but I’m retired and don’t drive as much anymore. I switched to Progressive, and they liked that I’m on the road less now.

I switched to a new insurance company that’s $5 cheaper per month. Same coverage, no spyware, no tracking device. It’s with Encova, and they’ve been around as long as USAA without all the mess.
