We all know that smoking and drinking can shorten your life, but I recently found out that there are other, more surprising things that can have a negative impact on your life expectancy. Things like not flossing or being too pessimistic! Has anyone else come across any unexpected life expectancy risks?
Yeah, I read about the sleep thing! I used to think more sleep was always better, but apparently sleeping more than nine hours a night can actually shorten your life. Seven to eight hours seems to be the sweet spot.
@Mason
Exactly! I was shocked too. I’ve always been a long sleeper, so now I’m trying to cut back a bit.
I was surprised to learn that sitting too much is so bad for you. Even if you work out, sitting for more than three hours a day can take years off your life. I’ve been trying to stand more at work because of that.
@Mckinley
Same here! I got one of those standing desks. It’s tough at first, but it really helps break up the day. Gotta keep moving, I guess.

The one about loneliness hit hard. I didn’t realize how much social isolation could impact your health. It’s definitely motivated me to stay more connected with friends and family.
Yeah, loneliness can be really harmful. It’s crazy how something that seems emotional can have such a big effect on your physical health too.
I laughed when I first heard that not flossing can shorten your life, but it’s true! Gum disease can lead to all sorts of other serious health issues like heart disease. Now I’m flossing every day without fail.
Who knew being optimistic could help you live longer? Apparently, people with a more positive outlook are 11%-15% more likely to live longer. I’m working on being less of a pessimist after reading that!
@dominic
It’s amazing how mindset can affect your health like that. It’s definitely something I’m trying to focus on too. Positive vibes for longer life!
