The roofing contractors didn’t seal some areas of the roof between sessions, and then it rained. Water ended up pouring into the house. Can I file this as a homeowners insurance claim? If not, what are my options?
That’s why contractors should have general liability insurance. It’s supposed to cover damages they cause during the job. If you didn’t ask them for proof of insurance beforehand, well, you learned the hard way. Always ask for an insurance certificate before signing anything. It protects you.
For example, if I’m doing a remodel and a tree falls on the work, that’s on the homeowner’s insurance. But if I’m reroofing and it rains, that’s on me. So always get proof of their insurance next time.

This is exactly what I was going to say, just not as well put.

I’m glad you mentioned that your insurance would cover damage if you had the roof off and a storm hit. That’s what happened to me. My contractor’s liability insurance company told me their limit for this type of claim is only $50,000. The damage was over $100,000, not counting the living expenses while I was out of the house for 6 months. I only found out about the limit after they were about to start repairs, which stopped everything. It’s surprising that a roofing company working on expensive homes has such low coverage. What should I do? Do I have to sue the roofer?
Most of the time, issues with poor workmanship aren’t covered.
