I bought a car from someone and had insurance on it, but I don’t think the car was officially in my name until the morning after. I ran a red light that night and got an email from the DVLA saying I’m the official owner the next morning. If a fine is issued, will it go to me or the previous owner? I signed the green slip and dated it the night I bought it, but the seller said he’d file it in the morning. I’m really worried about this. Please help!
Honesty is the best policy. If you ran the red light, you should take responsibility for it.
This isn’t really an insurance issue. Regardless of who the ticket is sent to, if you ran the red light, you’ll need to pay the fine.
Legally, the car became yours the moment you signed the bill of sale. The paperwork processing later doesn’t change that. Using this as a defense won’t hold up if you try to contest the fine.
