When I went to renew it this year, the increase was $100, and I was really pleased that Pets Best had paid $3k for my dog over the course of his first year. That is quite a bit, but whatever. The worst part is that my premium was raised by $500 for the entire year after they processed my final claim for this year. Why? since I relocated from Washington, DC, to Virginia, 15 minutes away. I am shocked that they removed my renewal fee just a week before it was due all because I moved last year.
As an employee of a pet insurance company, I can help clarify this. Moving from DC to VA made a big difference since the state of VA established the cost of veterinarian treatment for your dog’s demographics in that zip code, whereas the state of DC set its own costs. It so occurred that DC’s rate for your previous zip code was lower. I know it is bad, and I really wish there were national standards, but states, not the federal government, regulate insurance. The outcome would have been the same regardless of whether it was Pets Best, Truepanion, or Lemonade.
I use the same veterinarian, so that is crazy, and DC is undoubtedly more expensive. In any case, since they have already listed my renewal, they should not be allowed to change it.
An aside query. Does the age of the animal be the only factor used by Pets Best to raise premiums.
Indeed, Pets Best does boost rates in accordance with your pet’s age; in fact, they make note of this on their
All pet insurance policies do, in fact. A larger jump may occur after a few years say two or three if there are age brackets in place. Others typically divide up the increment annually, but people get upset when this happens every year.
