OB Charging Ahead for Birth of My Child, Threatening Interest

Hi, Our OB recently sent us a letter stating it’s a new office policy to require 6 months of prepayment for nearly $3,500 (until our estimated due date). They also mentioned that any late payments would accrue interest.

Is this even legal? We’ve always paid our bills on time and are maxing out our HSA to cover the cost of birth. It just doesn’t seem right to be charged for a service that hasn’t happened yet.

We love our OB and would prefer not to switch, but we’re unsure how to proceed.

What do you recommend we do?

Hi!

It’s understandable to feel uneasy about this new policy. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Review the Policy: Carefully read the letter and any related documents to understand the terms.

  2. Contact Your OB’s Office: Schedule a meeting or call to discuss your concerns. Explain your situation, including your use of an HSA, and ask if there are flexible payment options.

  3. Negotiate: Try to negotiate the terms. Ask if they can reduce the prepayment amount or offer a payment plan that fits your financial situation.

  4. Check with Your Insurance: Contact your insurance provider for assistance or advice on handling this situation.

  5. Seek Legal Advice: If you’re unsure about the legality or fairness of the policy, consult a legal expert who specializes in healthcare law.

It’s great that you have a good relationship with your OB. Open communication is key.

Express your concerns and see if a mutually agreeable solution can be found.

If you still feel uncomfortable, seeking a second opinion or consulting with a patient advocate might be helpful.
