basically what the title says. we’re thinking about moving home, two cars, umbrella, and accident coverage over to usaa. it’s a bit of a hassle since we need some info from my partner’s family. wondering if usaa’s rates and service are worth all this effort or if it’s mostly hype. would love to hear thoughts. thanks.
might be best to find out if you qualify first.
only way to know is to do a full quote. they’ve been competitive for me, but everyone’s experience varies. had three claims in 10 years, and they handled them pretty smoothly, no long waits or anything.
@Vern
thanks for the insight!
signing up for usaa didn’t take me long – i just used some info from my step-dad that i found online. you may be overestimating how hard it’ll be to get a membership.
for insurance though, i didn’t end up with usaa because their rates were higher than state farm. just do a quote to see if it’s worth it.
@Madden
yeah, my partner’s family situation is a bit complicated, so we didn’t want to jump through hoops unless it’s worth it. maybe we’ll just go for it.

usaa is solid overall. for auto claims, make sure to take your own photos and stay on top of things since their reps won’t always go the extra mile. but they’ve been really good when it comes to paying out for high-value items, like newer cars. and yeah, their app is pretty impressive.
@Florence
haven’t needed to make an accident claim, but their comprehensive and roadside assistance has been super easy for me. i did almost everything through the app without any hassle. so far, my experience with usaa has been really good, but i haven’t tried other companies as an adult, so no comparison there.
i’ve been with usaa for almost 40 years. don’t have active policies with them now, but over the years, i’ve had life insurance and investments. tried to get quotes for home and auto multiple times, but their rates were always higher than other companies. once, they wouldn’t even cover my older house.
but it’s definitely a ‘your mileage may vary’ situation. if you can qualify, get a quote from them and compare with others.
@Helgabuttner
i’ve been with them since the 80s too, and some of these bad experiences worry me.
i’m with usaa, and it annoys me how much they advertise when membership isn’t open to everyone.
i dropped their auto insurance years ago because it was twice as expensive as what i found elsewhere.

wow, i always thought they’d have the best rates.
@Sage
‘had’ is the key word here. prices have gone up a lot.
we just left usaa because their handling of our homeowners insurance was a nightmare. they outsourced everything, and we ended up with low valuations for our stuff. feels like they’re out of touch with how they should treat veterans. we spent a lot, and it wasn’t worth it.
for me, usaa is a big no. been with them 40 years, and it used to be great, but these last 13 years have been awful. every issue is a mess now. i’d say look elsewhere and save yourself the headache.
absolutely not! been on hold for nearly an hour just trying to get a simple billing question answered. their customer service used to be great, but now it’s like dealing with a different company altogether. my homeowners insurance went up drastically, and i don’t even live in a high-risk area. these days, it feels like they prioritize profits over people.
i wouldn’t recommend them at all – https://youtu.be/YvHFeZNBL-4

that’s oddly specific and kind of funny. good on you, my friend.
been with usaa for 30 years. things started going downhill after a change in leadership. dealing with them on homeowners insurance is such a hassle now. their car and motorcycle insurance was better, but i’m moving everything elsewhere. it’s not the company it used to be.
i’ve filed four claims with them in the past two years – three for auto and one for home. no issues with the claims, and the adjusters have always been helpful. it’s a bit pricier, but i’m willing to pay for the service.
