Is USAA losing its touch or am I overthinking this?

USAA used to be the go-to for military folks, run by veterans and for veterans. But now? They’ve been fined $140 million for allowing shady practices, and the new leadership doesn’t seem to care much about protecting our money.

Here’s something I found that really bugs me. Try this:

  1. Log in to the USAA website.
  2. Change your password to something longer than 64 characters.
  3. Log out and try logging back in.

It won’t work on the website, but it works fine on the app. What kind of system allows passwords longer than 64 characters but then locks you out? That’s basic stuff.

And don’t get me started on multi-factor authentication. They don’t even support hardware keys like Yubikey, which are some of the safest options out there. All they’ve got is the same old text messages and authenticator apps that aren’t foolproof.

Honestly, it feels like they’re more focused on profits than on keeping our accounts secure. Anyone else feel the same way?

Do any insurance companies even offer hardware keys like Yubikey to their customers?

Yeah, USAA has problems, but let’s not act like they’re the only ones. Banks like Wells Fargo, Chase, and BofA have all been fined billions. Sure, USAA isn’t perfect, but it’s still better than most big banks in my opinion.

@Arden
Are there any banks left that haven’t been hit with big fines? Starting to feel like there’s no safe place to bank anymore.

Probably not, honestly. After 9/11, banking regulations became a nightmare. Banks spend so much on compliance that there’s little left to improve customer service. It’s a mess everywhere.

You’re saying USAA is failing because of a 64-character password limit? That’s a bit of a reach, don’t you think?

Isn’t this a little dramatic?

Very dramatic.

This whole post made me laugh.

Honestly, unless you’re banking with a small credit union, you’re not going to find much better. Big banks are all like this or worse.

You started off talking about how USAA isn’t for veterans anymore and then used a password limit as your main proof? I’m struggling to see the connection here.

Man, if USAA stops letting me do shady stuff with my money, where else am I supposed to go?
