Is Tesla insurance worth it or should I stay with State Farm

I just got a quote from State Farm for my 2024 Model Y. They’re asking for $216 a month. I’m 27, no tickets, and only one accident when I was 18. I heard Tesla insurance might cost between $90 and $180. Does the safety score make a big difference to the monthly cost? Thanks for any advice.

Your safety score can change your price every month. I prefer sticking to regular insurance because it’s more predictable.

Does driving fewer miles help improve the safety score?

@Rene
Yes, driving less does help improve the score.

Thanks for the info. Do you use Tesla insurance? Is it cheaper than what I’m being quoted by State Farm?

@Teegan
I don’t use Tesla insurance. Prices vary depending on your location, driving history, and other factors. You could try getting a quote through the Tesla app to compare.

In California, they’re not allowed to use the safety score for setting your premium.

That’s a good rule. I wish other states did the same.

I started with Tesla insurance at $98 a month. I have no tickets, and my driving score averages 96. Two years later, it’s now $230. I opted for better coverage with a $0 deductible for windshield replacement, but a $130 increase feels high to me.

I got quotes from 10 companies. Progressive was the cheapest for me. Tesla insurance isn’t available in my state, but I don’t like the tracking system anyway. If someone cuts you off and you brake hard, you might still get penalized even though you did the safe thing.

@Aeron
One hard brake doesn’t hurt your score much. You’d need to do it often to see any impact on your premium.

Get a quote through the Tesla app. When I added my son to my plan, it ended up being cheaper than my old insurance.

I pay $54 a month, but that’s because I only drive 3,000 to 4,000 miles a year.

What insurance actually adjusts for low mileage? I don’t drive much either, but most companies don’t seem to care.

Is that with Tesla insurance?

The Tesla app makes it easy to get a quote and adjust your coverage. If you’re in California, the safety score doesn’t affect premiums due to state regulations. Otherwise, it can change your rate.

I’m paying $120 per month in my state. What’s everyone else paying? Curious if there’s a big range.

That’s a good deal. I’m getting quotes of $800 for six months from USAA.

@Adair
I was with USAA for over 10 years, but Progressive cut my rate in half. I couldn’t justify staying.
