Insurance estimate question

I was in an accident that wasn’t my fault, and USAA referred me to a shop to get an estimate. The shop gave me an estimate, but they won’t actually do the repair work. I took that estimate to another shop, and they agreed to do the repairs for the same price. However, USAA sent me a check for a different amount than the original estimate—they lowered it by $600. The cost for the fender went from $769 to $187, bringing the total repair cost down from $3,200 to $2,600. Is it legal for them to do this, considering they aren’t honoring the estimate from the shop they recommended? Thank you for your time.

Once I realized it was Liar Liar, I thought it was going to be the scene at the tow yard where he’s talking about the scratch on the side of his car.

That was supposed to be a reply to Big Bamboo back down at the bottom

Dude, the “.” is your friend.

What law are they violating?

Yes, that does happen.

But it was their shop’s estimate, and I did all the running around. Now I have to do it again after finding a shop that agreed to their original estimate. I didn’t mean to say it was illegal; I was just asking. I’m just a bit frustrated—sorry about that.

You asked if it was legal, so yes you did.

Doesn’t negate it can change. That’s usually what a supplement is.

Asking if something is legal is not the same as saying something is illegal

…it is but regardless the estimate can change. The point of your post/main question.

True, sorry about that. I tend to overreact when I’m frustrated. What about the rental car that I’m entitled to? I don’t have a credit card to rent a car. Do you think there’s any way I could get them to buy me a bicycle instead? It would probably be cheaper than the rental car.

No worries.

Yikes, unfortunately, no. Enterprise requires a credit card on file as part of their procedure, so they won’t go for the bike option.

You could consider using Uber or a taxi, and if things get really tough, you could “borrow” a friend’s car and set up a simple rental contract between you. It’s a bit of a last-resort option, but it can work.

For reimbursement, Uber and taxi rides should be covered.

(Edit: fixed grammar)

What about having a family member rent a car and I use their car you think they go for that

No. Because the rental is owed to you not the family member.

Plus you might not be allowed to drive the family’s vehicle unlisted listed. That’s asking for trouble.
