How to Apply for Social Security and Medicare Part A?

Hi. I want to apply for Social Security benefits with Part A only. I’ve already created an account. I’ve been paying taxes through employment for many years. In simple terms, what documents do I need to apply? Can I upload them, or do I have to mail them? Also, what additional steps are needed if I want to apply for Part B later? I’m new to all this but trying to learn.

How old are you, and are you currently still working?

Here’s a checklist from SSA

Apply as soon as possible. It took over 2 and a half months to process my application, and my retirement insurance was canceled as soon as I turned 65.

I’m almost 65 and still working. I want to apply for Social Security benefits, but for now without Part B. I may add Part B later. What do I need to complete the application?

If you apply for Social Security retirement benefits at least 3 months before your 65th birthday, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A. If it’s less than 3 months until your 65th birthday, you’ll need to apply for Medicare separately.

When your Medicare is approved, they will send you your Medicare card with the option to decline Part B. You can decline Part B at that time. If you’re applying for Medicare separately, you can specify on the application that you don’t want Part B.

Since your situation is straightforward, you can apply online for Social Security retirement benefits.

Log into your SSA.gov account and click on the ‘Start Your Retirement Application Now’ link. Fill out all the information, and your application will be sent electronically. Normally, no extra documents are needed unless there are other issues (like citizenship verification). If the application asks for specific documents, it’s best to bring the originals directly to the SSA office rather than mailing them.

If I apply for Social Security retirement benefits after my birthday, will I not be automatically enrolled in Part A? Thanks for the info, very helpful.
