I’ve heard emergency vet visits can be expensive, but how much are we talking? Anyone had to deal with a big vet bill for their pet? Trying to figure out if I need insurance for these situations.
Yeah, I’ve been there… My dog needed emergency surgery for a foreign object, and it cost $3,500. Luckily, I had insurance that covered most of it. Would have been a huge hit without it.

Oof, $3,500? That’s no joke. What kind of insurance do you have, and how much did they cover?
@Sage
I’ve got Lemonade. They covered about $2,700 after my deductible, which was a lifesaver. I paid $800 out of pocket.
Emergency visits can range a lot… My cat had a urinary blockage, and the whole thing came out to $2,500 with hospitalization. Pet insurance helped, but still had to pay part of it.

That sounds rough. How much did insurance cover for the blockage?
@Tobin
It covered about $1,800 after my deductible and coinsurance. Definitely glad I had it.
I didn’t have insurance when my dog needed treatment for bloat. The bill was $4,500… paid it all out of pocket. Looking into insurance now for sure.

Yikes, that’s rough. Did you look into any payment plans or financing options?
@Sage
Yeah, I used CareCredit to break it up into payments. Still paying it off though… would have been easier with insurance.
I think it’s worth getting pet insurance. My cat’s X-ray and hospitalization for a broken leg cost $1,200. With insurance, I only had to pay $400.

That’s not too bad! What’s your deductible and monthly premium, if you don’t mind me asking?
@Justice
I have a $250 deductible, and my premium is $30/month. Not too high, and it’s been worth it for peace of mind.
Just make sure you understand what’s covered before buying a policy. Some things, like pre-existing conditions, aren’t covered, so it’s best to get insurance early.

Good tip, thanks! I’m definitely thinking about getting it sooner rather than later.
