How high is a Senior Manager role at Geico? Does it compare to FAANG titles?

I was recently offered a Senior Manager position in a tech finance role at Geico. I’m coming from FAANG, so I’m wondering how high this position is at Geico. It doesn’t seem like they inflate titles the way banks do with AVP and VP roles, but in FAANG, a Senior Manager role is usually much higher than in most other companies. Just curious about where this role fits in the management chain.

Here’s a general structure:

Associate
Supervisor
Manager
Senior Manager
Director
Senior Director
Head of Department

Your department might differ, though.

Engineer → Senior Manager

There’s usually a principal engineer leading the team, but engineers report to the manager.

I think Senior Manager and Engineering Manager are similar in pay and skill level, just like how Engineer II and Senior Engineer work.

@Torin
Thanks, but it won’t be an engineering position.

Yes, I’m saying Senior Managers typically have engineers reporting to them, just like regular managers. It’s one level below Director, but I’m not sure how many Director levels exist now. I used to think there was just one, but I’ve seen Senior Director titles.

@Torin
Yeah, from what I’ve heard, it’s Director > Senior Director. Thanks, though. Just trying to figure out if it’s a fairly high title and not inflated like in other industries.

Geico stopped inflating titles around 2022. Before that, there were too many VPs.

It probably depends on the department. But when I worked at Geico 10 years ago as an analyst, my supervisor was a Senior Manager. She reported to the department VP.

I’d say it’s middle management, but a step up from the usual starting point. You manage a small team, like 4-6 people, but you can go from entry-level Manager to a higher grade.

@Tyler
Geico has changed so much from 10 years ago. It’s not the same at all, except for the name.

It depends on the department, but typically the structure looks like this: engineer → manager/senior manager → director/senior director → head of the department → executive → Todd (CEO). Senior Manager is kind of middle management. Not high enough for big bonuses but still the person people go to when they need things escalated.

@Clarke
Thanks! At what level do you get that big bonus?
