I got a car and insurance last month. Now Geico is emailing me for proof of residency. Problem is, I don’t have most of the documents they want. I rent, so no mortgage. Utility bills are in my landlord’s name. I’m not in college or the military, and my taxes don’t show this address yet since I just moved. I only have a pay stub, but they’re asking for two documents. Has anyone tried using bank statements or rental agreements? I’m in California and Geico was the cheapest option for me as a new driver. Everyone else quoted me $500 a month because I’m 24 and new to driving.
Did you call them to see if they’d accept anything else? A rental lease with your address might work.

I’m trying, but their underwriting number just has an automated system, and now I’m stuck on hold for 40 minutes. From what I’ve read, this seems like a common thing for California and maybe a way for companies to avoid insuring us here.
@Jin
Call 1-800-841-3000. You don’t need underwriting; just talk to customer service. The automated system is annoying, but you’ll get through to an agent eventually.

Do you have an agent? They might be able to help.

I bought the policy directly from Geico, so I don’t think I have an agent. This is my first time dealing with car insurance, so I’m not sure how to go about it.
@Jin
Check your emails or any welcome info you got when you signed up. Sometimes they assign you a contact person even if you buy direct.

Geico closed all their agent offices in California, so I doubt they assigned one. I went with them because they were the cheapest option for me.
@Jin
This isn’t just a California thing. They do it in other states for new customers too.

Rental agreements usually aren’t accepted because they’re easy to fake.
You can use a full bank or credit card statement from the last 30 days. It needs to show your address and transaction history.

I spoke to someone, and they said in California, transaction details aren’t required due to privacy rules. I submitted that and a pay stub, so now I’m just waiting to hear back.
@Jin
That’s great! Hopefully, they’ll process it quickly.
@Jin
Did the bank statements and pay stub work for you?

Yeah, it worked. But it seems like in most other states, they require transaction details.

That’s good to hear. Thanks for the info!
What about your driver’s license?

Not listed as an approved document. My address is updated with the DMV, but California doesn’t require a new license just for an address change, so it’s not reflected on mine.
