Firing people and then offering bonuses… what’s the logic here?

They let go so many employees, and now they’re offering sign-on bonuses. Feels like a slap in the face to those who got fired.

Instead of firing people, why not train them to do better?

I just got hired in the specialty customer service department ($23.23/hr). How often do they lay people off? Should I be worried? Any tips on keeping my job long-term? I’m about to move into my first apartment, and the thought of getting fired right after is stressing me out.

@Shan
If you can find something else, do it now. I was hired during the pandemic and got laid off on 09/24 with zero warning. I was a top performer, no write-ups, no chance to defend myself. Had to borrow money from family just to avoid being homeless. Now I’m stuck in a lower-paying job barely covering my bills. I wouldn’t risk it if I were you.

@Wylder
So you stayed there for four years?

@Shan
Yeah, you should definitely be worried. Job security here is a joke.

I don’t get the frustration. Companies lay people off all the time for different reasons. New hires getting a bonus isn’t that unusual.

Where do you work that doesn’t do this?

I’ve never worked anywhere that fired top performers just to replace them with cheaper labor.

@Wylder
I’ve seen plenty of companies do layoffs, fire people, and still offer sign-on bonuses. They always blame it on ‘changing business needs’ or some other excuse.

Totally agree that top performers are worth way more than whatever they save on wages. But the higher-ups don’t care. Look at Boeing—cut costs, lose talent, and now they’re in a mess.

@Ren
I’m not even mad about the bonus. What’s frustrating is that they clearly can’t find people to hire, which is why they’re offering it. So they fired good employees and now can’t even replace them. Poor planning all around.

Geico is run by people with the decision-making skills of a lizard. No surprise they don’t care about their employees.

What’s the starting pay for people responding to this ad? I think it used to be around $22/hr. If it’s dropped to $20, then after six months, the bonus means nothing. And if half the new hires don’t make it past training (which is probably the case), the company is saving even more by paying less overall.

This is just crazy.
