Coworker Hit My Parked Car…What Should I Do Next?

My front bumper and left front panel need replacing after a coworker hit my parked car in the lot. I have their insurance info and the claim number. I wasn’t around when it happened, but another coworker overheard them on the phone with their insurance, admitting fault and arranging for a rental for me.

Should I contact their insurance company directly, or should I have my own insurance handle it? I’d rather avoid involving my own insurance to keep it off my record and avoid any premium increases.

If you want to go through your own insurance, they’ll only deal with the other insurance if you use your collision coverage and they pursue reimbursement later. If you want to go through the at-fault party’s insurance directly, you’ll need to handle it yourself.

@Terry
The at-fault driver has already filed a claim and admitted fault to their insurance.

That’s good! If you’re going through their insurance, just call them directly, as your own insurance won’t be involved.

Get an estimate and submit it to the other insurance with the claim number. When the adjuster contacts you, let them know you need a rental, and they’ll likely take care of it.

Will they try to lowball me if I don’t provide an estimate?

@Thayer
They might disregard your estimate unless they ask for one. Typically, they’ll do their own assessment. They may also suggest a specific repair shop, but you’re free to choose your own. Your shop can submit a supplement for additional repairs if needed during the repair process.

@Thayer
Insurance companies usually work with their own shops, and those shops handle the pricing and repairs.

I’ve been in a similar situation—hit a parked car at work while trying to park. Ended up going through security, and my insurance took care of it. Not the most fun situation!
