Confused about USAA coverage for my stepkids … can I still extend it?

I’ve been a USAA member for years. I was married for 20 years, and my wife had 3 kids before we got together. I became their stepdad, and now they have kids of their own, so I’m kind of a ‘granddad’ to them. Since then, me and their mom got divorced, so I guess I’m not their legal stepdad anymore.

My question is … can I still help my stepkids or grandkids get a USAA account? I want to set up accounts for my grandkids and add money to them so they’ll have something to use when they turn 16-18. But I don’t want my stepkids (their parents) to have access to the money, just the grandkids.

If anyone can help explain or has experience with this, let me know. Feel free to DM if you need any more info. I might end up calling USAA, but thought I’d ask here first.

If you added your ex as a member while you were married, she should still be a USAA member and could pass that eligibility down to her kids, who can then add their own children.

What if I never added my ex as a member? Haha

@Wilder
Maybe marry her again? :sweat_smile:

Or you could call USAA and speak to one of their bank reps to find out for sure.

I’m married to a USAA legacy member, and they told me I’m not technically a ‘full member,’ but as long as I stay married to them, I get kind of an associate membership.

It didn’t feel right when they said it because their system even lost my info for about 9 months at one point … and I’d already been with them over 25 years. But that’s what they told me.

My stepdad got me signed up with USAA when I was a teenager … now I’m a senior citizen. So it should work out for you if you’re persistent!

Yep, stepkids are treated as kids by USAA. You should be able to add them as members and then they can add their own children.
