I heard that in California you can use Tesla insurance for non-Tesla cars. Has anyone tried it? My quote seems too good to be true—around $120 to $140 monthly for a Mercedes AMG GT43. I only drive about 4,000 miles a year for leisure. Is this legit?
I’m an adjuster and got curious, so I checked Tesla insurance through the app for my Model Y and an old Highlander. It gave me a 100/300/50 policy in Ohio with minimal uninsured motorist and medical payment coverage.
What stood out was that you can’t change coverage or deductibles upfront, and the policy details aren’t visible before purchase. Someone mentioned it might have odd terms, like state minimum liability if someone not listed on the policy drives your car. That’s worth looking into.
You might get better answers on a Tesla-focused forum.

Actually, r/TeslaLounge might be better. Some Tesla-focused forums have strict posting rules.

Looks like someone didn’t read the post.
I’ve heard Tesla insurance doesn’t handle claims well. If you need reliable service in serious situations, you might want to look elsewhere. Do your own research before deciding.

I agree. Their claims process is reportedly bad. I wouldn’t recommend it.

I had a good experience with Tesla insurance. Everything went smoothly for me, but I might’ve just been lucky.
@Caden
Glad it worked out for you! There are mixed reports, so it’s always smart to research before committing to a carrier.

Would you recommend Tesla insurance over Wawanesa?
@Caelan
It depends. Compare their credit ratings, NAIC complaint data, and customer satisfaction scores. That should help you decide.
I worked on Tesla’s insurance backend in California but don’t have the insurance myself because it’s not offered in my state. Insurance is highly regulated here, so you’ll generally get the same essential services as with other companies.
You might want to ask about this on a Tesla-focused forum. Some users say Tesla’s claims service is lacking, but that’s not unique to them. Just make sure to research thoroughly before choosing any insurance product.
@Owen
From my experience using the app, it feels like Tesla insurance is designed for people buying a Tesla who don’t want to shop around. It’s very basic and doesn’t let you adjust coverages upfront. It’s worth checking if the price works for you, though the safety score-based premium changes seem inconvenient.
@Owen
Thanks for the detailed response. I’ve been driving for 15 years (one year in California), but most insurers still give me quotes around $1,000 a month. Tesla insurance seems like the only reasonable option. Just wanted to confirm if it’s legit.
I switched to Tesla insurance because of the cost. Farmers and Progressive kept increasing my rates and requiring large upfront payments. Tesla insurance cut my costs in half, so it’s worth a shot.

Same here. I was paying $700 a month for a Model 3 and a Grand Cherokee. Now I’m at $280 with Tesla insurance.

How has your experience been so far?
@Rory
So far, so good. I haven’t needed to contact them yet, but signing up through the app was easy. The savings are great.
So you don’t actually need a Tesla to get Tesla insurance?

In California, you don’t.
