My father-in-law, who has passed away, was in the Navy when he was younger. Can my husband and I qualify to join USAA? I also have several great-uncles who were military pilots. What do we need to do to become members? Our current car insurance is terrible. Thanks for any help.
Your husband would have needed to join while his father was alive for you to be eligible.

That’s right. If your husband was ever on his father’s policy, then he’s eligible to join USAA. That’s how I joined—I was on my parents’ policy as a teen. After I got married, I was able to add my spouse even though they weren’t previously on a policy tied to a service member. The best thing to do is call USAA and confirm your situation.
If your parents were married, your mother (if she’s still alive) can get an account. Then you could join through her.
If the parent had a policy, you should qualify. They change the rules often, so just call them and ask directly.
Simple… if one of you enlists or becomes an officer in any branch, you’d qualify. I’d recommend the Marine Corps, though.

Space Force all the way.
Honestly, you’re not missing much. USAA has gone way downhill, and the car insurance is no longer worth it. I just canceled mine after 20 years.

Same here. Go ahead, downvote me, USAA fans.
Seriously, just call USAA and ask. The number is 800-531-USAA (8722).
This might be a blessing in disguise. USAA has shifted from helping service members to exploiting them. Look through this forum and you’ll see countless complaints. Their social media is also full of frustrated members.
Speaking from personal experience, I’ll never go back.
To be a member, you have to have a direct military connection. Honestly, though, their car insurance isn’t worth it anymore.
I also canceled my USAA policy after many years. I tried to warn them online that my credit card might’ve been hacked, and their system flagged my entire account. No matter how many times I gave them my PIN, policy number, and Social Security number, I kept getting told my info didn’t match. I couldn’t use the app or the website—they even wanted me to upload a PDF of my driver’s license.
That was the last straw. I switched to Progressive, saved $50 a month for the same coverage, and when I called USAA to cancel, suddenly I got through to a human instantly. Their customer service has become a joke.
