Can my doctor still send my prescription if they’re out of network next month?

i have a prescription for a controlled medication that has to be sent in manually every 30 days, not automatically refilled. my insurance will switch over in november, but my prescription date is mid-month and i haven’t set up a new doctor yet.

will they still be able to send my prescription if i give them updated insurance info, even if they’re out of coverage? i wanted to handle this sooner, but my new job’s been hectic, and it’s tough making calls during business hours.

when exactly does your new insurance start? will it be active before you pick up the prescription?

yes, it starts on the 1st, so it’ll be active before i pick up the prescription.

so it’s a controlled substance, but no office visit is needed, right? they just have to call it in to the pharmacy?

in my experience, refills typically aren’t billed unless there’s an office visit or certain tests are involved. and just to confirm, with your new insurance, your doctor won’t be in network anymore?

if i were you, i’d call your doctor’s office and explain the situation. usually, as long as you’re still an active patient and haven’t tried to get the script elsewhere, they should still help you out. this seems more like a procedural thing rather than an insurance issue. i’m not a doctor, but that’s my take.

might also help to check in the askdocs section.

that’s how i’d handle it.

@Arun
yeah, i only need an office visit every 6 months for this prescription. they do have to call it in each month.

that makes sense—i’ve never been billed for messaging my doctor to send the refill, just when i pick it up. i’ll reach out and let them know my situation.

hopefully, i’ll have a new doctor set up before my next round of labs in 6 months.
