Anyone else stuck in account holder change limbo? Been trying for 4 months…

Hey, I’ve been trying to get an account removed for 4 months now, and nothing is happening. Here’s the situation: I’ve had joint checking and savings accounts with my parents for a long time. My accountant suggested I remove them to simplify things, so we filled out the account removal paperwork back in July. Everything seemed fine at first, but there was one small mistake — we forgot to write the year on the date. The forms got rejected. We fixed it and resubmitted them, and everything seemed good after that. The savings account got updated, but the checking account showed the correct individual account, but still listed my parents as joint owners. I contacted them, and they said it was an IT issue and a work order would be placed. They told me I’d hear back in 5-10 business days, but nothing happened. Fast forward to September, I reached out again, and they said they’d submit another work order. Then, in October, I finally spoke to an escalation specialist who insisted I’d submitted the wrong form, despite me having the correct PDF with the right signatures. So, I resubmitted, and again, I got a rejection letter with the wrong signatures attached. After talking to an escalation specialist once more, they created a work order and said they could see the right documents and noted the wrong ones were reviewed. He seemed frustrated, but there was nothing more he could do. I’m just about at my wit’s end. It’s been over a dozen calls and months of trying, but it’s still not fixed. I’ve been a member for years and have never thought about switching banks, but at this point, I’m really frustrated. Anyone know what I can do next?

Have you thought about just opening your own USAA checking account and transferring the money? That might be easier.

I thought about it, but the agent told me it wouldn’t work because they expect the ownership permissions to stay the same. Not sure if that’s true though.

That’s not true. You can open a new account, just make sure you don’t select any joint account holders. Once your new account is set up, you can close the old joint account once it’s inactive. The other account holder doesn’t need to sign anything for that. You can even close it after a few business days if you’ve been using your debit card.

I’ve been through this. You can’t just remove the primary account holder. To get them off the account, the account has to be closed. Open your own account, transfer the funds, and then close the joint account. If your dad is the primary, when he closes it, they’ll ask where to send the remaining money.

I think they’ve messed it up pretty badly over there. It sounds like they deleted the name from the account styling but didn’t actually remove them from the account. These things can be fixed, but it seems like you need someone with very specific access to resolve it, and those people tend to mess things up and drag it on forever. Honestly, you’ll probably need to escalate again, and hopefully, someone with the right access will finally take care of it.
