Anyone else leaving USAA? Their service has gotten worse

A few years ago, I moved my investments from USAA because of their shady deal with Victory Capital. A couple of years ago, I moved my checking and savings accounts to Navy Federal, but every transaction — whether it was online, getting gas, eating out with my parents, or parking — triggered fraud alerts, even after I approved the transactions in the app. My account kept getting locked, and I was stranded a few times.

Dealing with USAA customer service was a nightmare.

Today, I’ve switched my auto insurance to State Farm. I’m saving $2,100 annually for two cars with no claims, no tickets, and I’m over 25.

I’m also switching my homeowners to State Farm. I’ll save $500 a year for double the coverage (to account for equity increases).

Hey Wayne…

State Farm is awful with claims… you’re getting what you pay for there

USAA isn’t much better. They completely messed up my last home claim — hail damage. Here in Colorado, we have a separate rider for wind and hail, but I still had to pay over $14K out of pocket.

USAA’s customer service is no different than any other company these days.

@Tory
That’s the truth, and the posts here confirm it. When I left USAA, they asked me for an exit interview, and I told them straight up, I can get terrible service anywhere. I’m not going to pay extra for it.

@Yan
Exit interview?

That’s odd. I pulled $50K out of USAA from my checking and savings two years ago, and no one said a word.

I took out a similar amount and had been with them for 25 years. I had a 10-15 minute chat with the rep and listed all my issues.

I got a call from a senior insurance rep when I canceled my 10-year auto and home plan with USAA.

@Tory
A lot of the posts on this forum talk badly about USAA because people are frustrated. But if you look at actual reviews and industry rankings, USAA pays out significantly more than State Farm. I’m not defending USAA’s rates or their CEO, but State Farm has a terrible reputation, and it’s earned.

@Luca
Look, if you’re loyal to USAA and want to bash State Farm, that’s your right. I have no problem with that.

But don’t misrepresent data. USAA doesn’t provide benchmark data to a lot of authoritative sources, like J.D. Power.

Please, cite your sources instead of presenting opinions as facts.

And if you’re using paid sites like Zebra for your comparisons, well, that’s just laughable.

I agree with the findings from usnews.com on USAA auto insurance. But USAA now is nothing like it was 10 years ago.

By the way, I paid $14K out of pocket for my only claim, even though I had a rider for that exact damage. So your claim that USAA pays out more than other companies? Not true in my case.

@Tory
So you’ll trust the sites you agree with, but dismiss the ones you don’t. Got it. I don’t care what you do with your life and your insurance choices.

You posted your opinion, and I shared mine. Good luck with State Farm — if your whole claim ends up denied, you can file with the state insurance regulatory agency.

State Farm and Nationwide won’t insure in my area of Texas because of fire risk. I’m sticking with USAA for now.

Yeah, that’s a concern for me too. I used to live in Colorado Springs, where home insurance can be as expensive as a mortgage due to the wildfire risk. I’m in northern Colorado now, and grass fires are a bigger concern than forest fires. That’s probably why I’m still getting a decent deal.

USAA is terrible with claims too. I had a property damage claim that was a disaster from start to finish.

I switched my insurance to Erie years ago. But my IRA has done okay with Victory Capital.

Cool. My issue with Victory Capital is that the deal with USAA seemed pretty shady.

If you’re making money, great — that’s the American way. But I didn’t want to take a risk with someone like David Brown.

Check out Progressive.

I was with Progressive when USAA dropped motorcycle insurance. Had no complaints with them.

Nice! I’m moving soon and will not be staying with USAA or their homeowners insurance. I’ll save money by switching.

Good luck to you.

The $2,100 savings on auto insurance was a huge deal for me.

I’m honestly sad about this. I used to be proud to be a USAA member, but it’s not the same anymore.

@Tory
I’ve checked other insurers, and for what I have with USAA, it would cost much more. I don’t understand why… I’ve been with them for 30 years, and I have a great driving record.
