I’ve been without car insurance for two weeks, and my 15-day review period ends tomorrow. Today, I got a letter from Geico saying I need to provide a bill or proof of residency by tomorrow. I live in California and have tried calling multiple numbers, but either they hang up with an automated message or I’m stuck on hold for hours without anyone answering. I haven’t driven my car in two weeks because of this. Does anyone know how I can get through or what I should do?
If they need proof of residency, that’s something you should send them via email or their website, not something that can be resolved over the phone.
Check your letter again, and follow the instructions to send the proof. They should respond in a few days if everything is good.
Call this number, and you should get someone quickly: 1-888-671-4405. You could start your coverage tonight.

Isn’t that for Progressive?

You want someone to pick up and get your coverage sorted, right? Trust me, call them.
@Zephyr
Honestly, I thought you were trolling, but you were right. Thanks!

No problem, glad it worked out! Now do us a favor and tell everyone how trash Geico is and that Progressive helped you out. Spread the word!
@Zephyr
Definitely! I had no idea the insurance industry was this messed up. Absolutely mind-blowing.

I called that number, and they told me there’s a mandatory 14-day waiting period. They even said it was required by the CA Department of Insurance. Is that true?
Try sending it to this email address: R4uwjjjj@geico.com. Include your name and reference number, and get it in tonight.
It’s weird that Geico is hanging up on you, as that behavior is usually monitored. Maybe it happened once, but it shouldn’t be a regular thing.

It’s not that they’re hanging up directly—it’s an automated message saying, “We’re not handling quotes over the phone right now. Please use the website or app,” and then it hangs up. When I try other options, I’m put on hold for hours.

I believe it. My dad lives in California, and Geico did the same thing to him. No one would take his calls, so he switched to another insurer.
@Robin
Geico seems to be playing games like this. They probably can’t refuse to insure you, so they make it really hard. We should consider a class action lawsuit against them.

I’d join that! Geico terminated my policy over proof of residence, even though I sent them two bills, my W-2, my lease, and bank statements.
You don’t seem to be following instructions. They asked for documentation, but instead of sending it, you called. When they said to use the website, you called again. Just send the documents already.

Exactly. Why are you doing everything except what they asked? You should’ve sent the proof of residency right away instead of calling them repeatedly.
@Emory
They sent the letter with only one day left to provide the documents, so that’s why I didn’t send it right away. But I figured it out now.

You’re right—Geico is shady like that. They send the letter just before the deadline and expect you to reply in time. They’re playing games to avoid covering people.
@Hart
Exactly! They sent me the letter with barely any time to respond. It’s like they want me to fail to meet the deadline so they can deny coverage.
