Will USAA drop my homeowners or raise my rates?

What if the damage was caused by a third party? For example, if the upstairs neighbor flooded my place, could their insurance cover it?

There’s no one above me to blame, unfortunately.

That would be the upstairs neighbor’s responsibility. If their insurance covers it, then it’s their issue, not yours.

I had two claims within 18 months a few years ago, and USAA didn’t drop me. But my rates went up, and I couldn’t even switch insurance companies due to my claim history.

I work in that department, so here’s the deal:

  1. Yes, your rates will increase over 2-4 years.

  2. If you’ve made too many claims, they might non-renew your policy, meaning you’ll be dropped at the end of your current term.

  3. Only file claims for major issues you can’t fix yourself.

  4. If you’re unsure about damage, don’t call your insurance just to get an inspector to check. They’ll count it as a claim even if there’s no actual damage.

I’m surprised you didn’t realize that claims are tracked. Like with auto insurance, even small claims, like a glass replacement, get recorded. Only file a claim if you really can’t afford to pay for it yourself.
