So I crashed my car on the highway a while back, but no one was hurt and it wasn’t reported. I left the scene and had my car towed. Now, I’m looking to get insurance for my new car and wondering if that old accident will mess up my rates? Anyone else dealt with something like this?
If you never got a ticket and didn’t file a claim, I’m pretty sure it won’t show up. Insurance companies check your driving record and claims history, but if neither has that accident, your rates should be fine.
@Lex
Good to know, thanks! I wasn’t sure if they’d find out some other way.
Yeah, I had a similar situation. Didn’t report an accident and it never showed up when I got a new policy. You should be in the clear unless you filed a claim or got cited.

Makes sense. No claim or citation for me, just a bad day on the highway!

Wait, what’s a citation? Sorry, not familiar with that term.
@PolicyholderPenny
Oh, it’s basically a traffic ticket or any official notice from the police.
@PolicyholderPenny
Yeah, like if a cop shows up and writes you up for something, that’s a citation.
For sure, unless you filed something with your insurance, it won’t show up. They mainly check two things: your driving record and your claims history. If nothing’s there, you’re good to go.

Sounds like I’m safe then. Thanks for breaking it down!
Also, FYI, if your driving record and claim history are clean, they’ll have no clue about the accident. It’s like it never happened unless there’s a paper trail.

Nice, I was worried they might find out somehow, lol.

Yeah, no paper trail, no worries. Happened to me once too, and it was all good.
I’d say don’t stress it. If they don’t see anything in their checks, you’re in the clear. The only time it could come up is if you had a claim or the police were involved.

Appreciate the reassurance! I’ll keep that in mind for next time.
