Why Do Autobody Shops Ask If I’m Going Through Insurance?

Hallo…

I’ve got a quick question—why do autobody shops always ask if I’m going through insurance or paying out of pocket? Feels like they might charge more if insurance is covering it.
Would it make sense to say I’m paying cash, get a lower estimate, and then pocket the difference when insurance pays out? Has anyone tried this or is it more trouble than it’s worth?
Curious to hear your thoughts

Regards…

The store must be informed whether you are using insurance because the billing procedure varies. Insurance companies  frequently have their own procedures and repair costs.

Prior to the start of work, insurance companies might need to approve the repair estimate. This may have an impact on the schedule and components used

Some insurance companies have “preferred” shops they work with regularly. These shops might follow specific guidelines set by the insurer, which can influence the repair process

Insurance companies may prefer to use aftermarket components in order to keep expenses down and frequently negotiate reduced prices with shops.

There is typically additional documentation necessary when repairs are paid for by insurance. :disappointed: For the store to get payment from the insurance, all paperwork must be in order.
