Why did my USAA insurance go up so much?

I’ve been with USAA for over 20 years, but I just couldn’t take it anymore. My car insurance jumped to $5300 every six months—that’s for four cars and two kids under 25. I switched to Geico, and now I’m paying $2500 every six months. USAA is just not the same company it used to be.

I’ve been a member for almost 40 years, and I feel the same way. We have two minivans and barely drive them, but our rates jumped from $125 to $300 a month in just two years. I finally left for Progressive. The coverage is better, and it’s half the cost of USAA.

@johnsonludwing
I just spent an hour on USAA’s website trying to close an account. When they asked why, I pointed them to their recent cease-and-desist and sarcastically said, ‘Maybe another Gronk commercial will fix it.’

@Bryce
All banks get cease-and-desist orders. It’s not that unusual.

True, but this one is major. It’s not just a slap on the wrist. They’ve got issues with IT, compliance, and reporting that they need to address ASAP.

Agreed. Their IT is awful. The fact that they limit passwords to 12 characters is ridiculous and outdated.

@Bryce
I’m sure your sarcasm really made a difference. LOL.

Trust me, I wouldn’t want to work there either.

Exactly what I was thinking! LOL.

@johnsonludwing
I’m about to do the same after 25 years with USAA.

@johnsonludwing
That was my situation too.

@johnsonludwing
Something feels off with USAA. My rates randomly jumped from $400 to $750 for a few months, then dropped back down without any explanation. It’s like they’re testing how much they can charge.

@johnsonludwing
Honest question—what’s the emotional attachment to this company?

I’ve been with them since the ’80s, back when they were highly exclusive. The service and prices used to be unbeatable, and my family had all our accounts there. It was more about tradition and loyalty, but that doesn’t make sense anymore.

I just switched to Progressive too. Went from $1100 every six months to $550. USAA is no longer competitive.

Be careful—Progressive tends to raise rates after the first six months.

@Eden
Good to know! Thanks for the heads-up.

@Eden
I switch between USAA and Progressive every six months to keep rates low. It works!

Weird—USAA is still cheaper for me. I guess it really depends on your situation.

Same here. I have three cars and pay $246 a month for full coverage. It seems to vary a lot.
