Why did I get this sales call about retirement accounts?

Just got a call that started with something like “I’m calling because you showed interest in retirement accounts.”

I haven’t done anything to show interest in that. Then the guy just kept talking fast, trying to stop me from saying anything. It ended with:

“Can I connect you to one of our retirement specialists?”

No way. This doesn’t feel like the USAA I trusted before.

Have you tried changing your settings for how they contact you?

Good idea. I checked, and I only have email and mail selected for offers. No phone calls.

Why not just hang up and move on? They’re just doing their job.

But if lying is part of their job, isn’t that a problem?

I doubt they’re lying. Sometimes just opening an email or clicking on something online counts as interest. It could’ve even been an ad. I stopped answering unknown calls, and it really helps.

@Bailey
It might’ve been an email, but they still shouldn’t call. My preferences say email and mail only.

Are you sure you didn’t accidentally click on something about retirement accounts or IRAs? Usually, these calls come from some kind of lead.

@Bennett
I’m positive. My preferences only allow email and mail, so even if I had, they shouldn’t be calling me.

If you find a bank that doesn’t try to sell you stuff, let us know.

Until now, it was USAA. I’ve been with them since 1990 and never got sales calls like this.

I’ve been with them since 1986 and have gotten calls before. I just tell them no thanks and to stop calling.

@Grey
Maybe your preferences allow phone calls? Mine don’t.

One call in 34 years has you this upset?

@Thorne
It’s not just one call. If USAA is ignoring contact preferences to make sales, that’s a bigger issue I’m pointing out.

But this is the only time it’s happened to you in 34 years, right? Is it worth a whole post?

@Thorne
Yes, because it might not just be me. If they’re breaking communication rules, it could affect others too. Wouldn’t that matter?

It’s one mistake. Mistakes happen. Feels like you’re just looking for something to complain about today.

@Thorne
It’s not just a mistake. USAA’s been struggling financially, and if they’re breaking rules to push sales, that’s a problem.

For example, they’ve had to raise insurance rates to recover losses. It’s all part of a bigger picture.

Sounds like you’re just yelling at the sky.
