Why am I getting sued after a car accident? (NJ)

OP:
I’m in the same boat now. I found your post because I was also wondering why this wasn’t handled by the insurance companies. I got served today, and it was filed a day before the two-year limit (Indiana). I already scanned and emailed it all to insurance and am waiting for a response. The delay in delivery stressed me out since it had to be forwarded to my new address.

I used to work in healthcare and they advise having your own lawyer because if you’re sued, the hospital’s attorney would only protect the hospital, not you. So my question is, do I need my own lawyer here?

@Nuri
I was wondering that too. Waiting to hear back from insurance but really hope they provide a lawyer.

So far, it sounds like no, we don’t need our own lawyer. My dad worked in insurance, and he says they probably already went after my insurance and got denied. But he thinks the two sides will settle before trial even if it says ‘trial’ on the summons.
