Which vision insurance is primary… GEHA or VSP?

I have vision coverage through my health insurance with GEHA, which is provided via Eye Med. I also have a separate VSP plan. How do I figure out which one is considered the primary insurance? Do vision insurance companies coordinate benefits?

I only got the VSP plan because I didn’t realize the vision benefits through GEHA were pretty decent. I’m planning not to renew the VSP next year since the GEHA coverage seems good enough.

VSP is probably your primary. Usually, health insurance only covers eye issues if they’re emergencies, not routine exams or glasses.

Actually, my GEHA plan offers a full vision benefit: $150 towards glasses or contacts, a $5 copay for eye exams, and $39 for a retinal scan. It’s almost as good as my VSP plan.

In that case, you’ll need to check both policies to see which one lists itself as primary. They should explain how they coordinate benefits.
