Just read that Texas is a tornado hotspot, and the season runs from April through June. With everything that’s predicted for 2024, anyone doing anything different to get ready this year? I’m new to the state, so any tips would be great!
Yep, it’s always a wild time here in Texas! I’ve already started trimming trees around my house and bringing in loose stuff from the yard. Last year, some of my neighbor’s lawn chairs ended up in my pool, lol.
@Phoenix
Haha, yeah, flying lawn chairs are no joke. I just cleared out some firewood from my backyard too.
I’ve got my emergency kit ready! Water, non-perishables, and a battery-powered radio. The power tends to go out when things get serious.

A radio is a great idea! I always forget about that. I just rely on my phone, but with no power, that’s risky.
Houston gets hit a lot, so I’ve got storm shutters installed on my windows. They’ve already saved me a couple of times.

I’ve been thinking about getting shutters too. Do they really make a big difference when the winds pick up?

Definitely! They protect from debris hitting the windows, and my insurance gave me a discount for having them installed.
Anyone else got their community’s weather alerts set up? I signed up for the National Weather Service alerts, and it’s been super helpful to get a heads-up when things are about to get rough.

That’s a great idea, I’ll definitely sign up for those. How accurate are they?

Pretty spot-on. The sirens help too, but I like having alerts directly to my phone just in case I’m out and about.
Don’t forget to secure your garage doors! My neighbor’s blew in last year, and they had a ton of damage inside the house from the wind.

Oh wow, I never even thought about that. Guess I’m adding it to my prep list now!
