I’ve been hearing about DUI and DWI a lot, but I’m not totally sure what the difference is. Are they the same thing, or does one mean something worse?
Good question! I think it depends on the state you’re in. Some places use DWI for drug impairment and DUI for alcohol.

Yeah, that’s what I heard too! DWI might be more serious because it could mean drugs are involved.
@Eli
Exactly. In some states, DWI is only about drugs, while DUI is for alcohol. Crazy that it’s not the same everywhere!
@Eli
That’s so confusing! You’d think there’d be a standard definition across the board.
I’ve always thought they were the same thing… didn’t realize it could vary so much by state.

Me too! I guess it’s one of those things that depends on where you live. Makes it hard to know for sure.
@Keaton
Yep, and insurance rates can go way up for either one. Like, almost double sometimes!
I’ve heard you can lose your license for either, but maybe a DWI comes with stricter penalties?

That sounds right. DWI usually carries harsher penalties if it’s related to drugs.
Fun fact: in some states, you can get a DUI without even hitting the .08 limit if you seem impaired.

Wait, really? So it’s based on how you’re driving, not just BAC?

Yeah, if you’re weaving or something, they can still charge you. It’s more about showing you’re unsafe.
DUI and DWI both mess with your insurance big time… expect to pay a lot more if you get caught with either.

For sure. Insurance companies really hike up the rates. I read it can last for years on your record too.
