I’m considering switching to Tesla insurance because they quoted me at least $200 less than other companies. I live in Los Angeles, California, and have a 16-year-old who occasionally drives our Model Y Performance and a Model 3 RWD.
For those using Tesla insurance, how has your experience been? Does the safety score system feel overly sensitive (e.g., night driving, quick acceleration)? How much does a lower safety score affect premiums? Also, what’s an average safety score?
The safety score doesn’t apply in California, so your quoted rate will stay the same during the policy period. I recently insured my Model Y with Tesla insurance and haven’t had any surprises.

Thanks for clarifying. That makes a lot of sense now.

How do you know which states use the safety score?
I have Tesla insurance in Oregon, and my average score is 94. I pay a little over $100 a month. The most annoying parts of the safety score are night driving and forward collision warnings. But I’ve heard that in California, the safety score doesn’t affect rates, which is great!

Thanks for the info! That’s good to know about California. My car gives me warnings when driving up and down the narrow street near my house because of parked cars.

No need to worry in California; your driving score doesn’t matter for rates.

Do they track your driving like Progressive with a plug-in device?
I’m not sure because I’ve only insured Teslas. I was thinking of adding a Honda Accord at one point but didn’t go through with it. Maybe make a post specifically about that?
I’ve had Tesla insurance since 2019 in San Diego. It’s been okay, but the app is frustrating. If your rate goes up, you can call them, and sometimes they’ll adjust it back down.
I had an accident recently where an uninsured driver totaled my new Model 3. The claims process has been slow and frustrating—was told it could take up to 8 months. Filed a complaint with the California insurance commission. Be cautious if you’re considering Tesla insurance.
In California, it’s illegal to base insurance rates on driving habits, so your rate won’t change month to month. I have Tesla insurance on a Model Y Performance in the Bay Area, and it’s been consistent.
