Tesla Insurance - Give Me The Good And The Bad

My partner and I are preparing for our new arrival (aka baby Model Y) to arrive between April 20th and the 27th. The last item on our checklist is deciding on insurance, and we’re debating Tesla’s offerings.

Tesla Insurance offers the lowest rates and better coverage compared to our current car’s plan with Progressive. However, we’ve heard mixed reviews about claim delays and customer service issues. Progressive is $70 more per month but seems to have a more reliable system.

We’d appreciate any insights or experiences to help us decide. Are the negative reviews still valid, or are they just part of Tesla’s initial growing pains?

If you live in an urban area, Tesla Insurance might be frustrating. The driving score penalizes you for things like braking hard or being too close to other cars, even in unavoidable traffic situations. My premium jumped from $80/month to $120/month within a month due to these factors.

Switching to ‘Chill Mode’ driving helped me keep my score steady in the 90s. But living in a busy area makes maintaining a high score difficult.

I had Tesla Insurance when I got rear-ended. While they handled everything relatively quickly, the lack of weekend support and occasional communication gaps were frustrating. It was still worth the savings for me.

Did you end up paying the deductible, and was it reimbursed?

I switched to Progressive. Tesla Insurance made me paranoid with constant score monitoring. Small things like avoiding potholes or braking suddenly could affect my rate.

A Tesla-certified body shop told me Tesla Insurance is difficult to work with during claims. It’s surprising since you’d expect them to approve Tesla repairs seamlessly.

If Progressive is $70 more monthly, I’d consider Tesla Insurance unless customer service is a huge priority. They’re still working through growing pains.

Tesla Insurance penalizes you for things like late-night driving or false collision warnings. It’s worth it for the savings, but I eventually switched to bundling my car and home insurance.

Tesla Insurance might look cheap but could get expensive if your driving score drops. I recommend trying GEICO or State Farm for competitive rates. Costco Connect Insurance is another good option.

Tesla Insurance was convenient for my claim. They processed everything faster since I stayed within their ecosystem. However, their driving score system can be frustrating to manage.

Thanks for the input, everyone! We decided to go with Costco Connect Insurance for now. It had solid reviews and offered a good rate through our membership.
