Tesla insurance experiences?

What are your experiences with Tesla insurance? I’m paying $230 a month, but other quotes for the same coverage ranged from $450 to $550. I use Autopilot for about 80% of my driving, but I do drive at night sometimes, so my safety score is 93.

Would love to hear how it’s working out for others. Any thoughts on how night driving or safety score impacts your premiums?

I’ve been pretty happy with Tesla insurance so far.

I have 3 Teslas (a 2023 Model Y, a 2024 Model Y, and a 2023 Model 3) and a Toyota insured under Tesla insurance. My premium for next month is $466.

I haven’t tried Tesla insurance because I don’t like the idea of being monitored while I drive. My Model S costs $168 a month with my current insurance, compared to $79 a month for my Nissan Rogue.

In California, insurance companies can’t use telematics to track your driving. That’s one of the reasons I’m happy with Tesla insurance here.

Tesla insurance is much cheaper in some areas but not everywhere. Night driving and lifestyle factors can make it a bad choice for some people. I always recommend getting quotes from multiple companies and rechecking every six months.

I’m saving $400 a month with Tesla insurance for two cars (one Tesla, one non-Tesla). However, I had to file a claim for a repaint after a break-in, and their communication was terrible. Be prepared to follow up daily if you need something.

I’m 80 years old and live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I switched to Tesla insurance from CSAA after being with them for over 50 years because they raised my rate from $150 to $192 a month. Tesla started me at $120, but it went up to $170 after six months with no clear explanation. I drive less than 300 miles a month, so it feels expensive at $0.57 per mile.

If you want a cheaper car to insure, go with an older Honda Accord or Civic.

Tesla insurance used to be a lot cheaper and offered a 50% discount on parts at service centers. But they’ve raised rates recently, and their customer service is poor. I switched to Progressive for a 40% discount.

@Kim
Progressive quoted me over double my Tesla insurance rate. I think it’s because of where I live.

Switching insurance companies every couple of years can save you money. Many companies raise rates incrementally, and new carriers often offer competitive quotes to win your business. Loyalty to one insurer doesn’t usually give you any extra benefits.

@Hollis
Completely agree with this approach.
