Tesla Insurance doubled my premium—what are the best alternatives?

Tesla Insurance is a scam! Bought my Tesla in April, same coverages double the premium 6 months later. Safety score doesn’t even affect insurance policy in CA. What insurance should I switch over too?

The same thing happened to me with State Farm in California. Insurance rates across the board have been skyrocketing lately.

Isn’t the point of Tesla Insurance to avoid those kinds of rate hikes by using driving behavior to set premiums?

@Peyton
California doesn’t allow insurance companies to use telematics like Safety Scores for setting premiums.

You should shop around for quotes. Rates vary a lot between companies.

Did your mileage change? That can make a difference in premiums. I’m currently with Geico paying about $800-$900 every 6 months, but my mileage went way down after I got a new car. It might be worth checking other options.

@Kennedy
I didn’t update my odometer reading when Tesla Insurance requested it. Maybe I’ll try that before switching.

I had the same issue. Started at $90/month and now it’s $195/month.

Same here. I switched to State Farm and now I’m paying $88/month, though I’m keeping an eye on it.

That’s an amazing rate! Are you bundling with other policies?

Call as many carriers as possible for quotes. I’ve been with Amica for years, and they’ve been competitive for California.

Strange, my Tesla Insurance premiums have stayed steady and are about half what I’d pay with State Farm. Been with them for over two years. I’m in Nevada though.

I had a similar experience with Mercury—they raised my rate by 30% after six months for no reason. I switched back to Progressive, and now my premium is under $900 for six months in Arizona.

Get quotes from at least three other companies and pick the cheapest option that meets your coverage needs.

My premiums doubled with State Farm in California over two years. Now I’m paying $1400 for six months.

I use an insurance broker who shops my policy around every few years. They usually find a better deal when premiums go up.

I heard Geico is now offering Tesla insurance in California again. Might be worth getting a quote.

Insurance rates seem to have gone up everywhere, not just with Tesla Insurance. I switched to USAA, but I’m still paying more than I was a year ago.
