Should I switch from USAA to Progressive for insurance? Shocked by the price difference!

Hey everyone,

I’ve been with USAA for 15 years, but with the recent price hikes, I decided to get a quote from Progressive just to see what they could offer. To my surprise, Progressive’s rates are about 50% cheaper than what I’m paying now! Same coverage levels too.

Am I missing something here? Has anyone else made the switch from USAA to Progressive? Any advice or insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

A lot of factors go into insurance rates. Even your next-door neighbor with the same car and insurance company could have totally different rates. It’s always a good idea to shop around every now and then to see what works best for you.

@Keaton
Same here! After 25 years with USAA (no claims or tickets in decades), I got a Progressive quote. USAA: $1535 every six months for auto (3 drivers, 4 cars), $3100 annually for home. Progressive: $598 for auto, $2700 for home. It’s hard to stay loyal with such a huge price gap.

@AgencyAndrew
The USAA Subscriber Shareholder Account gives some money back, but it might not be enough to make up for that kind of savings.

Last year, I got $172 back from that account. It doesn’t really make a dent.

Progressive is known for giving a low introductory rate to attract new customers and then raising rates after the first 6-12 months. It’s worth keeping an eye on that, but they might still be cheaper in the long run.

@Teagan
Even if they raise rates later, as long as it stays under $1,275, I’d still be saving money. USAA’s rates are just crazy right now!

I’ve been with Progressive for 4 years now after leaving USAA. My rates have stayed stable, and I’ve even had a smooth claims process with them.

@Beck
That’s great to hear, but my experience was different. After a year with Progressive, my renewal rate jumped, and switching back to USAA actually saved me money.

I stick with USAA because they really came through for me in a tough time. It’s not just about the price; it’s about reliability when it counts.

Keep in mind that your credit score can significantly impact premiums. If you have excellent credit, you’ll generally get better rates. It’s worth considering this when comparing companies.

Good to know. My credit score is 815, so hopefully, I’m getting the best rates available.

Has anyone had to file a claim with Progressive? I’ve been with USAA for years and their claims process has been fantastic, even for major events like roof damage. Curious if Progressive matches that level of service.

I switched to Geico in 2013 for auto insurance. Same coverage, way better rates. Zero regrets.
