Short-Term Rental Burglary

Hello,

I own a short-term rental property that was recently broken into. The guests are claiming that nearly $100,000 worth of their personal items were stolen. If insurance doesn’t cover their loss, what should we do next? We’re worried they might come after us personally or try to threaten us financially or even violently, as they are holding us responsible. What steps can we take to protect ourselves?

Insurance adjusters have already visited the home, and there’s a police report and video footage of the house after the burglary. There are no signs of forced entry, but the suspect is on video entering and leaving.

This is the first time something like this has happened to us, and we are unsure where to turn for advice.

Short-term rentals face burglary risks due to high guest turnover, vacant periods, and public listings. Enhance security with visible cameras, alarms, and smart locks. Use changing access codes and secure key storage. Educate guests on local security measures to reduce vulnerability.
