I did this over 20 years ago. Some people enjoy this kind of work, but I was fresh out of college and desperate for a job, and they were the first to offer me one.

They sell you on potential earnings, and sure, some people make great money. However, it’s set up like an MLM. The main agent, often called the State General Agent, makes a lot because anyone who leaves has their residuals roll up to them.

I was one of the last to take the paper and pencil test. They had just started doing online tests, so people hired after me were licensed before me because the electronic test was faster.

Once I got into the field, I realized I hated the job. It wasn’t for me. I had to memorize a 5-page pitch word for word and even learned the cancer pitch first in my group.

But the role is a grind. You’ll enter people’s homes to talk about whole life insurance when they can barely afford rent. You’re in your car all day, driving to appointments. I don’t know if they do virtual appointments now, but I doubt it since some products require saliva samples, signatures, and checks.

If you like commission-only and fieldwork, give it a shot. But it wasn’t for me, and I was glad to find another career afterward.

Good luck.
