After over 30 years with USAA, I decided to switch. I recently moved from New Jersey to Louisiana, and my auto insurance rates with USAA increased by about $100/month, bringing my total to over $250/month. Out of curiosity, I got a quote from Progressive, and they offered $48/month for the same coverage with some additional perks.
While I’ve always valued USAA’s mission and service, the price difference was just too significant to ignore. Goodbye, USAA auto insurance!
I just added a teen driver and decided to get a quote from Progressive. Our USAA rate tripled after adding our son, but with Progressive, it’s only $50 more than our old rate. I like USAA’s mission, but my wallet wins this time.
Glad it worked out for you! I shopped around recently and found USAA still had the best rate for me, while Progressive and others were significantly higher. It really varies based on location, driving history, and other factors.
@Aubrey
That’s true! I compared apples to apples with my quotes, and for whatever reason, USAA’s rates in Louisiana were outrageous. Maybe it’s related to uninsured drivers in the area?
I left USAA after 23 years when they increased my rate from $800 to nearly $1,800 every six months, despite no accidents in 17 years. I switched to AAA, which offered better liability coverage for about what I had been paying before the hike.

What are your coverage levels for $48/month? Are you just getting state minimums?
Nope, I have $100k/$300k liability coverage, a $500 deductible, and added uninsured motorist coverage. It’s the same or better than what I had with USAA.
