My friend from Poland is coming to visit me in California for 2 weeks. She wants to drive my car while I’m at work. She has a Polish driver’s license, but I’m worried about what happens if she gets into an accident or damages my car. Is there any insurance she can get that would cover any damage to my car? And what about damage to someone else’s car if there’s an accident?
Your insurance might cover her, but do you really want someone unfamiliar with US roads, especially in California, driving your car?

You could try adding her to your insurance temporarily.

No, don’t let her drive.
That’s not a very helpful answer. Want to explain why?

Because she’s not licensed here, and you’d be liable for anything that happens. Better safe than sorry.

She can drive with her Polish license. It’s the same way we can drive overseas.

That depends on the state. She might need an IDP or meet other requirements. It’s not as simple as saying she can drive. Safer to rent a car.

You’ll need to call your insurance agent to find out. Some policies allow this, some don’t. But remember, any damage or accident while she’s driving will impact your insurance.

I don’t think she can drive in California with a Polish license. Canada has agreements, but I’m not sure about Poland.

She can get an international driver’s permit in Poland before coming here.

That should work, unless your insurance has a restriction about foreign drivers.
