My apartment keeps charging me for renters insurance even though I already have it... what should I do?

So, my apartment complex has been charging me for renters insurance even though I already have my own policy. They admitted they were wrong but still haven’t refunded me or stopped the charges. I’ve been charged since February, so they owe me almost $100 now. I’ve talked to them multiple times, emailed the proof of my insurance, and they keep saying they’ll fix it but nothing changes. What can I do at this point? I’m moving out soon too.

Ugh, I’ve had a similar issue before. Definitely document everything—emails, conversations, etc. If you’re moving out soon, maybe send a final letter demanding the refund and threaten legal action if they don’t fix it.

@Nico
Good idea. Have you thought about withholding that $100 from your last rent payment? Just make sure you explain why in writing so it’s on record.

That could work, but be careful. If they refuse the partial payment, they might try to take legal action. But since you have proof they admitted fault, you should be in the clear.

If they keep dragging their feet, you could consider filing a complaint with the Texas Attorney General or a local tenants’ rights organization. Sometimes that pressure is enough to get them to act.

I wouldn’t recommend skipping your rent altogether. That could backfire if they decide to take you to court. Better to send a written letter outlining your case and let them know you’ll deduct the amount they owe you.

@Wynn
Totally agree. It’s a good idea to get everything in writing so you have a paper trail. If they refuse, at least you’ve documented that you tried to resolve it fairly.

I’d suggest recording your interactions too, if it’s legal in your state. It sounds like you already have an audio recording, which could help if they try to deny anything later.

Texas tenant laws are pretty clear about this. If they owe you money and aren’t fixing the issue, you have every right to demand a refund. If they don’t comply, you might have a case for small claims court.

@Aki
Small claims court could be a good option, especially if they owe you more than just this $100. It might make them take you more seriously if they realize you’re willing to go that far.
